In the Bedroom...Collins Interiors

In a Dallas couple’s master suite, Collins paired romantic custom wallpaper from Gracie with a mix of white and ivory Matouk bed linens.

The Dallas designer reveals how to dream up a modern, romantic sleep space.

Collins Interiors, a Dallas-based design firm, has been creating refined, sophisticated spaces since it was founded in 1992. Founder and principal Cynthia Collins' clients span the country from North Carolina to Colorado, Utah and California in addition to projects in her home state. The designer regularly brings Texas charm and classicism into spaces and mixes those elements with a fresh, modern point of view.

Cynthia and her team maintain an extensive in-house library. Each year they travel to England and France where they handpick antiques, lighting, and distinctive accessories, which they layer with contemporary artwork, custom upholstery and fine textiles.

Collins says, “each detail is meticulously planned with the client in mind and chosen for its functionality, meaning, and beauty.” Her spaces have garnered much-deserved attention from domino, Better Homes & Gardens, luxe, Southern Living and more.

An old world yet modern master bedroom caught our eye on the designer’s Instagram feed and we had just had to know how she put it all together. See how Collins convinced a husband to live with a pink bedroom, her top bedroom tips and more.

If this bedroom had a name, what would it be?

"The Floral Story.”

How did you strike a balance with color and pattern?

"It is important with such a strong color and pattern choice to ground the room with beautiful antiques. The tones of lavender and pink were thoughtfully selected to avoid a youthful direction and elevate the room to a sophisticated palette.”

It must have started with that wallpaper…

"Of course! It’s Gracie hand-painted wall coverings. It’s a real work of art. We selected the colors and pattern specifically for the client and room. Each panel is painted to fit the other perfectly, no two are alike. The client wanted something beautiful and feminine—a complete departure from her previous room.”

Any traditional bedroom design rules you like to follow or break?

"White or ivory bedding is never out of style. The bedding in this room provides a field of calm color—a resting place for your eyes when paired with this large-scale floral.”

The sitting room off the master incorporates the sophisticated palette of the space.

Can you share some ideas for recreating a look like this in our bedroom?

Collins loves to use a writing desk as a bedside table. The upholstered chair adds a deeper dose of color.

Double Up

"Always use a pair of matching lamps. It brings symmetry to the room.”

Blend Well

"Don’t be afraid to mix colors and patterns, as long as shades compliment each other.”

Nix a Nightstand

"A writing desk is always an appropriate way to address a bedside table. It’s also a way to incorporate another upholstery fabric with an occasional desk chair.”

“The husband gets a prize for allowing and living with a pink floral garden in his bedroom.”

Tell us a bit about the Matouk linens you chose. Why were they right for this space?

"The slight sheen on the Classic Chain Duvet has a luxurious look and feel. The textures on the Ava quilt and shams add interest and a layered effect. The Lowell Collection also has such an extensive choice of colored tape and embroidery that works with so many of our schemes. Our clients also really appreciate how well they wash."
