We believe in leaving the planet in a better state than we found it. As part of our mission to create the world’s most beautiful, enduring linens for the home, we also want to contribute to the well-being of our environment. We’re proud to share some of the steps we’ve taken to build a more sustainable future for Matouk, our community and the Earth as a whole.
Our Recent Results
We’ve taken several significant steps with regard to waste reduction, recycling and energy conservation.
- Over the last 3 years, we've reduced our landfill waste by 55%.
- We’ve improved energy efficiency by 41% since 2022 through lighting and heating efficiency upgrades.
- In 2024, we saved nearly 40 tons of textile remnants from landfills, providing them to a recycling company to be repurposed for insulation.
- In 2024, we also recycled over 65 tons of cardboard and almost 2 tons of electronic waste.
- We recycle 100% of our wood pallets as well—approximately 1,200 per year—diverting them completely from landfills.
Additionally, through a partnership with our primary towel supplier in Portugal, we’ve adopted reinforced shipping cartons, enabling us to reuse nearly 9,000 cartons each year for our outbound shipments.
OEKO-TEX STeP
We have received the prestigious STeP by OEKO-TEX® certification, for our Fall River, MA production facility. STeP (Sustainable Textile Production) promotes environmentally and socially responsible practices in textile manufacturing.
Assessments are conducted by an independent international body which performs a meticulous analysis of textile facilities. Strict qualifiers of excellence must be met across different criteria, including environmental performance, chemical management, quality management, health & safety in the workplace, and general social responsibility.
Our manufacturing team worked tirelessly for years to attain this rare certification, which only a handful of production facilities across the United States have been granted. We are committed to responsible manufacturing and believe in working with companies and individuals across the globe who share these beliefs.
Our Headquarters
One of the most visible symbols of our sustainability efforts is the solar panel system we installed on the roof of our Fall River factory in 2010. It now generates approximately 30% of the energy needed to power our facility, reducing our carbon footprint by more than 815 tons of CO₂ emissions.
For context, the energy powered by our solar panel system since installation is the equivalent of:
- Charging over 250 million smartphones
- Charging over 56,000 electric cars
- Over 40,000 nights of lighting the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree—that's over 110 years straight.
Our Partners
Across our global supply chain, we work with socially responsible partners who share our values and commitment to sustainability. Strengthening supply chain sustainability requires strategic investment and long-term collaboration, and we have already seen meaningful results.
Since 2010, our primary towel supplier in Portugal—also an OEKO-TEX STeP-certified producer—has reduced the water required to produce our towels by more than 50%, saving millions of liters annually.
In 2016, we introduced the Matouk Down Collection, crafted by our exclusive partner Dorbena in the Swiss Alps. This collection is DOWNPASS certified, which ensures that all feathers are ethically sourced and processed using environmentally responsible methods. Dorbena’s use of solar power, local Alpine water and biodegradable detergents allows them to exceed the highest standards for sustainability and responsibility.
Our Corporate Responsibility
We are committed to conducting business with integrity, transparency and respect for all stakeholders. Our code of conduct reflects these principles and provides guidelines for ethical decision-making. Any code of conduct issues or concerns can be reported here.
Our sustainability journey is ongoing. We believe in improving our processes and decreasing our impact on the Earth every year. We remain focused on driving positive change for our company, our industry and the planet.
